I can’t make the 40-mile drive from Houlton to Presque Isle without pulling over to visit one of the planets. Aroostook County is home to one of (if not THE) largest three-dimensional scale models of our solar system in the world. Built by the people of Aroostook County, including many local high school students, the model turns Route 1 (north) into a drive between Pluto and the Sun.

On a recent visit in 2018, Jupiter looked like a big lollypop in the sky, surrounded by its four little lollypop moons (not photographed, but they’re all there!). Learn more about the solar system model at this University of Maine at Presque Isle webpage.
